Holiday Decorating Checklist

 Do you enjoy decorating your home for the holidays?

If you love putting up holiday decorations and hate putting them away, here are  EIGHT tips for creating a holiday storage system that works:

1. Create a decorating theme and stick to it! When your decorating has a theme or colour scheme, items that no longer work are obvious. Either change your theme or let the “orphans” go.
   
2. Store only what you want, use and love! When you begin your decorating this year, and uncover items that no longer work for you, share or donate them immediately.
   
3. Keep original packaging. Nothing protects fragile holiday decorations better than the original packaging.
   
4. Store “like” with “like”. Store house decorations and tree decorations separately so you know where everything is when the urge to decorate comes over you.
   
5. Use vertical space. Clear plastic shoe boxes work wonders for small, decorative items. Identical boxes can be stacked on a shelf or in a box to maximize storage space. Easy-to-see, easy-to-find!
   
6. Create a Holiday Tool Kit. Have everything – ornament hooks, tape, wire cutters, extra lights, scissors and ribbon – in one place when you need it!
   
7.  Label everything. Decorating is meant to be fun, not a chore. When you have a system in place and everything is labeled, there are no surprises! You know where everything is when you are ready to get started.
   
8.  Set aside time. Schedule time for decorating and “de-decorating”. Create a holiday storage system this year and next year’s decorating will be more enjoyable.

Here is to a wonderful start for the decorating season whether it starts with pumpkins at the beginning of fall or you decorate only for Christmas. Either way have fun and enjoy.

Questions About the Economy?     Hello , As a mortgage professional I'm often asked my opinion on the economy and its impact on new and existing mortgages. The good news is that, on the whole, the economic outlook for the future is strong. Unemployment numbers continue to decline with companies investing in infrastructure as well as hiring. Additionally, the stock market - a good bell weather for future growth - remains high and strong. But, what does this mean for the current homeowner or the first time homebuyer? Mortgage rates remain historically low even as the Federal Reserve scales back its monthly purchase of bonds. If you've put off refinancing, now is the time to do so. A lower rate combined with a shorter term could provide you with significant savings. Conversely, home values in most markets have rebounded. This means, if you're looking to sell, you're in a better position to recoup your investment. If you're looking to buy - while there are still some bargains to be had - you'll find a more stable market with realistic prices that make it easier to get that much needed loan. The outlook for the economy is good and the housing market is bouncing back. While home values and interest rates have fluctuated throughout history, the bottom line is that a home is still among the best investments you can make. Don't be put off by the naysayers. Keep in mind that every mortgage is unique and that there are an array of FHA and conventional products available to meet the many needs of both homebuyers and homeowners. Downsizing and de-cluttering

The core of the downsizing plan should address the primary rooms within the home like the living room, bedroom, dining area and kitchen and as these tend to have the bulkiest objects and also contain the most ‘stuff.’ Unfortunately, these rooms often tend to feature items that both used regularly and also pieces that hold high sentimental value. It’s essential when deciding what to take on the move to know the measurements of the new living space.

This can help determine how much and which items goes onto the ‘take with’ list, especially concerning furnishings and unnecessary items that there may not be ample room for. Tackle each space armed with boxes or containers to separate items between five piles—those to: keep, pass along to family, donate, sell and throw away. Once these are these tackled, plan to take to task other areas like bathrooms, garages, attics, basements and sheds etc.

When seniors or their families are trying to determine which ‘pile’ and item should go into, ask the following questions until an answer guides your hand.

• Is it necessary?
• Does the senior really want it?
• Are their multiples of this item?
• Is this utilized regularly?
• Is their sentimental value to the item?
• Is it of significant financial value?
• Will this fit into the smaller space?
• Would a family member or friend appreciate the item or use it?

Be forewarned, this may be a multi-faceted process, as it is not uncommon for seniors and their families to have to tackle the piles again in effort to further reduce the keep pile. Remember, it’s a long and challenging process that will take perseverance and patience by all involved in the downsizing process.
