"How does the home sale tax exemption work?"
Answer:Under current IRS Code Section 121 rules, if you've owned & lived in your home for 2 of the past 5 years (730 of the past 1826 days), you can sell and exclude up to $250,000 of your gain if you're a single, or $500,000 for couples.
NOTE: There are MANY exceptions that allow you to sell & avoid gain without having owned/lived in for the 2 years.Please verify the above with your favorite tax professional.
